I offer one-to-one mentoring for illustrators and book makers who want practical feedback from someone working in children's publishing.
Spending quality time with illustrators at the beginning and middle of their careers is one of my favourite parts of what I do. We’ll get into the nitty gritty of what's working, what's not, and — perhaps most importantly — how you feel about your work.
Throughout my own journey, I’ve repeatedly come up against areas that have filled me with mild dread – to name a few: literally any colour that wasn’t pink, orange or black! Backgrounds! Eyes! All things I’ve instinctively avoided looking at too closely, but when I did, led to the most growth, and also joy!
In short, I think the places that scare us are often the most interesting places to go. Together, we'll work out what’s already working excellently for you, and where you can push things forward, plus how to actually, practically, make it happen.
Areas we can work on:
Portfolio feedback
Composition and balance
Character design and how to keep yours full of life as you develop them
All things visual style
Picture book / early readers development – think story, tone, and narrative voice
Publishing, agents and career questions
Idea generation and keeping you moving through a project you're stuck on
Anything else that sits between or adjacent to these topics!
How it works
Before: You'll send me your work and answer a few questions from me so I can review everything beforehand.
During: We'll spend 60 minutes together on Zoom, focusing on exactly what you want to get out of the session.
After: I'll send you a short set of notes and suggested next steps.
